about
"Cornfields and Roadkill" in all its rock 'n' roll glory, is an honest ode to the midwest in the tradition of legends Neil Young and Tom Petty. The midtempo melody is both political and ruminative, for the outlaws who hammer away unabashed.
lyrics
There is an old barn on a ghost farm
Hollowed out and filled with stars
The sky fell through the busted roof
A hole so wide, the moon came too
There’s a strange glow in these kind of ruins
A broken dream we’re clinging to
Cornfields, roadkill, bird song, hoping still
Still thinking about that oak tree
There on the edge of that property
On land stolen, bought, and tilled
Two hundred years and that tree is still
Holding up the canopy of a forest cut for currency
Can’t imagine, still I try
Intelligence outside my mind
Patience, dignity, old-growth, green leaves
Deep roots, metal teeth cutting through the years of those tree rings
Tornado siren, tumbleweed, Christmas lights on main street
Cornfields, roadkill, bird song, hoping still
Driving wild to get there quick
Outrunning the hurt you know will stick
Rich with excuses but I’m not convinced
Just cause you’re speeding ahead
Doesn’t mean that it’s fixed
Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches between experimental folk and
environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves breadcrumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars....more

This ain't Texas. This ain't Nashville. This is country that straddles the US and Canadian border. Its wide open, strong, and a little vulnerable, and in a lot of cases having a good ol' time. I love her feel. veenstar

A very clever songwriter and an album that bears many, many repeat listens. Worth the price for the Little Feat reference (in Tehachapi) alone, but it's her way with an image that sticks longest. "You left the building in a flurry / Had your boots on in the house." Caoimhín
British folk musician Tom Nash built these delicate and moving songs around a broken harmonium, allowing its limitations to open up worlds. Bandcamp New & Notable Oct 12, 2021
