about

As a Minneapolis native, Humbird is all too familiar with the Northwoods. In response to Bob Dylan’s iconic number, “Girl from the North Country” Undlin provides a love letter to her own home in the North Country after traveling away, “I began to wonder about the story within the lyrics from her perspective. What would she say to this long-lost lover who left the north but still sings of her?”

Humbird took this as an opportunity showcase her own influence of traditional English folk music. “As the song developed, it became an expression of the haunting beauty of northern climates and the power behind choosing to stay. The folk music tradition is riddled with songs about traveling, the road, the rambling spirit. This song explores the opposite. What does it mean to remain in a particular landscape? What does it signify when someone chooses to stay, even when it's hard?”

lyrics

Bobby was asking after my warm jacket
And my long hair and memories far gone
Cryin' out now about the North Country Fair
How could I forget when I’m still living there

Some leave
Some leave when the rivers freeze
Some go
Some go when the summer ends
Sometimes
Sometimes they don't come back again
Some of us
Some of us prefer that fair northern wind

He remembers the ice and the snow
Sings of me now that we’ve grown old
I care not, but he left for warmer sun
Could not tempt me from the land where water runs

Some leave
Some leave when the rivers freeze
Some go
Some go when the summer ends
Sometimes
Sometimes they don't come back again
Some of us
Some of us prefer that fair northern wind

Many nights many nights yet to pass
Til the columbine blooms again
In the darkness of my days
Night is bright and clear
It takes your breath away

Some leave
Some leave when the rivers freeze
Some go
Some go when the summer ends
Sometimes
Sometimes they don't come back again
Some of us
Some of us prefer that fair northern wind
